Exfoliating with glycolic acid: is it good for your skin too?

Exfoliëren met glycolzuur: is het ook goed voor jouw huid?
|Sanne Dubois

Glycolic acid is the ingredient skincare enthusiasts rave about: it's said to smooth your skin, fade pigment spots, and restore your natural glow. But does it really work? And is it even suitable for your skin type? In this blog post, we'll delve into what glycolic acid does, who it's suitable for, and how you can use it safely for radiant, fresh-looking skin.

Why exfoliating after 30 really makes a difference

Once you hit thirty, your skin's natural renewal process slows down. Where your skin cells used to be replaced every few weeks, it now takes considerably longer. The result? Dead skin cells build up, your complexion becomes duller, fine lines become more visible, and your skincare products seem less effective.

That's where exfoliation comes in: a way to gently renew the skin, without scrubbing granules or rough cloths. And perhaps the most well-known ingredient for this purpose? Glycolic acid.

How Glycolic Acid Renews Your Skin

Glycolic acid is a so-called AHA – an alpha hydroxy acid – that occurs naturally in sugar cane. Thanks to its ultra-small molecular structure, it can penetrate the skin more deeply than other fruit acids. This makes glycolic acid highly effective at removing dead skin cells, stimulating cell renewal, and improving overall skin texture.

If you use it regularly, you'll notice your skin feels softer, looks fresher, and even responds better to your other skincare products . Studies also show that even at low concentrations (from 5%), glycolic acid contributes to firmer skin, reduces the appearance of fine lines, and can even lighten superficial pigment spots.

It is not without reason that it is a popular ingredient among dermatologists and skin care enthusiasts.

Does exfoliating make your skin thinner?

A frequently asked question, and a very understandable one. Because glycolic acid thins the top layer of skin (the one containing dead cells), some believe it makes your skin more fragile. But the opposite appears to be true: the deeper layers of skin become more active, fuller, and firmer as you exfoliate regularly.

Glycolic acid stimulates the production of collagen and elastin – the building blocks of firm, resilient skin. It can even help partially repair damage caused by long-term use of corticosteroids (such as hormone creams).

Important: new skin cells are more sensitive to sunlight. A good sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is therefore essential, not only for exfoliating, but as part of a healthy skin routine in general.

Is glycolic acid right for your skin?

Glycolic acid is essentially a versatile ingredient, particularly suitable if your skin feels dry, dull, or uneven, or if you want to address fine lines and age spots. It creates a visibly smoother and fresher skin texture, without the need for scrubbing or intensive peeling.

However, if you have oily skin with blemishes or congestion, an exfoliant containing salicylic acid (a BHA) may be more effective because this acid is fat-soluble and works deeper in the pores. Glycolic acid is water-soluble and works more on the skin's surface.

Unsure? Start with a mild concentration of glycolic acid (around 5%), like in our exfoliant, and gradually increase your dosage. Almost all skin types tolerate it well, especially in a nourishing formula with soothing ingredients.

How to use a glycolic acid exfoliant correctly

The way you use glycolic acid largely determines the results. Always start on clean, dry skin. Apply a small amount to a cotton pad and gently wipe over your face. Don't rinse—let the product absorb gently and finish with a nourishing cream.

Start with 2 to 3 times a week and see how your skin reacts. A slight tingling sensation is normal, but redness or flaking means you should take it a bit easier. And repeat the mantra: SPF, SPF, SPF.

Our Våra Glycolic Acid Exfoliator also contains natural extracts such as cranberry and lingonberry, which not only provide antioxidants but also soothe and condition the skin while exfoliating.

So, is glycolic acid right for your skin?

If you're looking for softer skin, a more even complexion, and a natural glow, chances are glycolic acid is right for you. It's a well-thought-out ingredient that truly works—when used correctly. With a gentle exfoliant, a little patience, and the right sun protection, you can give your skin a significant boost without stripping it of its shine.

And that's exactly why exfoliating with glycolic acid isn't a luxury, but a smart step in your routine.
